Photographs January - February

Last week I asked to shoot a Ballet class at Lewisham College. I sat in on 2 of the lessons and photographed as much as I could. Here are just a few of the images I took that day.

I used a Canon 5D, a 50mm lens, and on couple of the photos a Canon 470 flash.

The lighting was lovely on the day of the shoot and at the time I was shooting at. Around 10am until 12pm, light shone through the big open windows making the room have a gold tint to it. This also allowed me to have a wide variety to play around with on my camera.

At the start of the shoot I shot the whole class as a whole warming up and getting told what they had to do over the next few weeks.

A few minutes later when everyone was on the bar, I went round and shot them all individually. I liked using the 50mm lens, it forced me to get up close to the dancers.
Robert Capa said "If your photographs aren't good enough, you're not close enough."
Which I fully agree with. However I am normally a victim of shyness or self conscious. This was a good start to building that confidence a bit more, as I had full permission to take the dancers pictures however we were all strangers daunting at times as I was clearly the outsider.

The class did however warm to my presence and hopefully I will be going again this Tuesday. I'm planning to make a book on dancers over the next year.
